Paper artist Siphon Mabona is most definitely one of the world’s geniuses. His ability to make things out of paper knows no bounds. Above are just some of his animals he has made, which also appear in various commissioned projects. No detail is skipped, no characteristic overlooked, these aren’t just impressions of animals, these are animals. Each ear, nose shape and even the carp’s teeth are there in each crease, dimple and fold of paper. The presentation of the creations in his exhibitions are cleverly displayed using shadows and rainbow hues which give the installations movement, a strong sense of realism and a quality of life that one almost has to double check that they are indeed paper. The animals are equally as striking in both colour and in mono colour. I would absolutely love to see them up close. The two videos, one for Asics and one for Toshiba are absolutely works of art and I cannot even begin to comprehend how much work each must have involved. Both are kept clean and simple with the use of all white paper. I have watched the videos so many times that my fingertips are empathetically sore and yet my sense of wonder never diminishes.
