Manolitos Dream Manolitos Dream Palette

I’m still watching the animation that I featured in Monday’s blog post, Manolito’s Dream, and enjoying it so much that I’ve done a little interiors paint blog post to accompany it. The colours are marvellous in it, as are these, and whilst you may not use them all in one room (god forbid), they look pretty spectacular here all together. So, please enjoy the short and I hope you don’t all have nightmares of living in a room painted in all of those colours at once. Crikey, just think, D.I.S.C.O.

Lindsey Lang A Sweet And Sour Palette

Zingy and zangy, fresh and clean, these colours are colours of popping candy, of sweet and sour, they’re bright and dark, pastel and moody. So many contradictions and yet in the midst of all the fighting there is peace and tranquility, and here resides Lindsey Lang’s products. Her little stall at this year’s Design Junction, was in a little corner at the back, but has stayed on mind since. It’s not every day that I get to sing the merits and joy that a trivets brings me but today, I do. Lindsay’s trivets (second row down) are her pièce de résistance. The colours and patterns come together in this simply designed and oft overlooked piece of kitchen equipment, in such a way to be quite a thing of pure joy. As you can tell, I’m a fan. She does other stuff too, for those that aren’t such ‘riveting’ triveting enthusiasts.

Jennifer Collier When Paper Becomes 3D

Oooeeee, look at these pretties! I love paper craft, and as much as I try, I just don’t seem to have the knack (or patience) for intricate and detailed pieces. But paper artist, Jennifer Collier does as these images of her fantastic creations testify to. Just thinking about how she’s done them makes my brain hurt so I shall just go back to looking and cooing. Very clever and very inspiring. Do have a look at the rest of her website and treat yourself to an early Christmas pressie. Or me, if you feel so inclined.

Purple Grey and Yellow Purple, Grey and Yellow

My current colour crushes, purple, grey and yellow. Rather 80s, I grant thee that, but it’s all in the application, you know. Slithers of zing in amongst dark slathes of colour will have the angels singing songs of glory upon high. Believe me. Lighten it up with pale accessories and you’ve got yourself a powerhouse of colours within which to bathe. It’s officially Autumn and they best you can do is to embrace it wholeheartedly. Go forth and choose strong.

Goat & Aaron from Gabe Askew on Vimeo.

This is truly beautiful animated story about two brothers and the detail is breathtaking. Written and directed by Gabe Askew and made at Hornet Inc.. I’m not entirely sure that I know what’s going on all the time but that doesn’t really matter, they tell you enough to know it’s really rather sweet and heart-warming. Definitely worth watching on a bigger screen with decent resolution and you’ll need to watch a couple of times to enable you to get the full pleasure of the drawing and imagination that has gone into the landscape. I absolutely love the sea and how they’ve achieved its sparkle and movement. Gosh, aren’t them lot over at Hornet Inc. clever?

rain1 Rains Down, Down On Me

So, having got drenched yesterday it seems somewhat pertinent to be blogging about an exhibition about rain which doesn’t get you wet. Yes, people, you read that right. A rain exhibition. You’d have thought that in this country the last thing we’d need is a room of rain. And even more amusingly, the day I went, I had to queue for almost an hour to get in. Laugh, you may, but the last laugh will be on you if you don’t go. Rain Room is the latest project and installation from those clever people over at Random International at the always and forever fabulous Barbican, London. It’s free to get in and on until March 2013. Make sure you get down there. This is art definitely worth getting wet for, or rather, not.

paperflowers Papel de Flores

No, these aren’t particularly Spanish. In fact, Spain nor Latin America has anything to do with any of these images. It was just a little flourish, a little fluffing up as paper flowers just doesn’t sound as exciting, does it? However, this wee blog post is merely a pictorial pleasure ride than anything of meaning or substance. I like paper flowers and soon shall be having a go. I’ve done origami flowers before as you can see in my portfolio, but I want to try something different. Fingers crossed, they’ll work out lovely.

Quilt Light by Tamara Maynes DIY In A Good Way

I didn’t get to do much of London Design Festival this time round but what I did do was good. Very good. And this lady particulary stuck out. Tamara Maynes is part of the new contemporary design showcase at 19 Greek Street, and has designed a template of a lampshade called ‘Quilt’. You buy the template rather than the lamp, which you then download and print out to make at home using whichever material you wish. A splendid idea. Scalpels at the ready.

Seven Sisters1 The Seven Sisters

Sunday saw the Summer’s final fling of glorious sunshine, which surely signals a change in the weather and the start of the move towards Autumn. And how better to spend it than out in the fresh air. I bade farewell to London with all its activities (Paralympics closing ceremony and The Thames Festival) hopped on a train and chugged my way down to the south coast. Slathering on the sun cream and looking the part of the ultimate walking geek, I headed to the beach at Seaford and hooked a left, heading east along the coast. This little walk was by no means a breeze. 21km of pure unadulterated hill and no joke, various parts of my body are still stiff rendering it tricky to do even the most basic of daily movements. However, the views were such that I would do it again in a blink of an eye. We are rapidly losing our south coast due to the aggressive erosion of the sea, which has been documented in the dramatic photographs on display at Birling Gap, charting the demise of Birling Gap in particular. On the day went, and slowly climbed all seven of the sisters and made it to the top of Beachy Head. The weather momentarily turned for the worse and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the clouds blow on in, we were spared and remained safe on top the cliffs, despite moments of uncertainty. With my end goal of Eastbourne now in sight, I ignored my throbbing feet and onwards was spurred. I skipped through Eastbourne (not literally) without stopping even for chips and settled smugly onto the train, an hour earlier than the book predicted. Go me. I recommend it to anyone and everyone. No walking book required as you just follow the coast!

Aeros Its All In The Aeration

Gosh, well, what can I say about this little beauty? I really don’t know. It’s rather rendered me speechless. Designed by Ross Lovegrove and produced by Louis Poulsen, this holy ring of light might cost you one or two of our British Aeros but it sure would be worth the sacrifice. Measuring just shy of 3/4 of a metre, or a slightly friendlier measurement of 723mm, this is a BIG fella but one definitely shouldn’t be put off by this. Size is not all that matters though bigger is sooooooo much better in this case. This is a light that will look just as fantastic lit as unlit, with its beautiful cut-out pattern and sleek shape. Also comes in an anodised golden-sand colour.

Aeros pendant light, £1,527, Louis Poulsen
